Akureyri Artists Studio Residency

Hybrid: Lava & Light
Populus Tremula Gallery
June 2013

Posting on Facebook for this residency has been expedient and allowed public feedback. Here are some highlights of the process I have experienced over the last few weeks.

  1. Now that the last piece is waiting for glue to dry, the studio feels deserted . Where did everyone go? [Debora, there was only ever you here.] For weeks, I have felt in good company. Time to clean up the remains of the party.

  2. Cleansing oneself of wishes that work works is like washing clothes in the sink. No matter how many times you squeeze out suds, there is always a little residue.

  3. Thinking of projection that holds the work together, passage of thought to audience, as if the ideas came from the world and are returning with a note of anarchy, and through my spirit and mind as appendages – the note writing is a little wobbly.

A little known fact about me: I am very fond of the word rapscallion. Not deceitful or rogue, as Mark Twain captured them, I prefer the rascal association and long to be a playful rapscallion.

Went to sleep zonked at nine only to wake from a vivid dream where someone I knew decades ago insisted I find my daughter. Just called her. She is fine. Was using Skype, so, being on the computer, I decided to research boat metaphors because of someone’s post and the browser took me to a link ‘Draw’ in a dictionary. Heeding this fortuitous quirk. I would like to think this is the reason I am awake. Going to draw now.

A good 6 hours of sleep with 5 more sculptures to make, a 3D painting to complete, and the inspiration of blank pages in a find of a modest new sketchbook I am realy for the day @ 13:13 on the 22 2013. Remembering I have less than a week to outpour what I can, here in Akuryeri.

I often feel I am corrosive acid or purifying water and worry either result or the tension between does not appear in my work, that it is not disturbing enough, that I am not revealing enough. Not that I wish more anxiety, only a better ability to extract what I experience(d) through my work. Not fearful, just wanting enough from myself. One more week of this residency. Must put myself through all kinds of trials, it seems.

So excited. My ‘Icelandic Eyes’ series is a success. 5 glass eyes with lava pupils came out of the kiln today, were extracted from their molds and cleaned. Ready for the show, with the other work (still in progress). Thanks to Ragney, the Punturin tech for her fearless help in removing the glass from their plaster beds. (17 photos)

  1. Iceland’s national holiday gave me an excuse to be a tourist today. People paraded past me, and I followed them to the square where musicians entertained the children. Then I followed a different crowd to the Hunsi 11, a wood boat that took about a hundred of us through the fjord, allowing panoramic mountain views and a bright sea breeze to freshen the afternoon, as these pics show in sequence. (17 photos)

Nearly midway in my Akureyri art residency, midway if you count the installation process for my exhibition at the Populus Tremula Gallery later this month. I drew ‘The River Runs Up’ yesterday. Then, I started working in a new direction. If images are a revelation of my mind, sculpture is the revelation of my spirit. (4 photos)

Enjoyed a mid-day swim under the near clouded sky. The sun blinds when it shines, which has been most of the time. No evening or morning twilight here. Just dimmer light, then sun, again. One thing I learned is I have Icelandic toes. — with Tyr Jamiand 4 others at Sundlaug Akureyrar.

The closest product to plaster here is a gypsona bandage. Powder bags of the white stuff are not available in the building or art supply stores, it seems. Or I am not asking for what they know as the name of this product, also referred to as gifs, apparently. I have resorted to describing sculpture familiar to Icelanders – Einar Jonnson’s work in white, and explaining Melardo Rosso’s process. So, …See More

Just arrived at Akureyri Artists Studio this afternoon. Somewhere in the city, this Canadian artist is looking for other artists – I was told they are here. ‘You just have to find them.’ Okay. Thanks! A little tired from the 4 hour bus ride. Maybe tomorrow. Maybe they will find me?
